What is DIGIPIN?
DIGIPIN is a modern digital addressing system introduced in India to improve accuracy in location identification.
It is an open-source, geo-coded system that assigns precise addresses using advanced mapping technology.
The Department of Posts developed DIGIPIN in partnership with IIT Hyderabad and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) of ISRO.
It divides the entire country into small grids measuring approximately 4 meters by 4 meters.
Each grid is then assigned a unique 10-character alphanumeric code.
This code is generated based on the grid’s exact latitude and longitude coordinates.
Unlike traditional postal addresses, DIGIPIN offers pinpoint accuracy for any location, including remote or unaddressed areas.
It can identify homes, shops, businesses, and even open land with precision.
DIGIPIN aims to overcome the limitations of vague, inconsistent, or incomplete traditional addresses.
This system is especially useful for emergency services, postal delivery, and logistics.
It supports faster, more reliable, and more efficient delivery of goods and services.
DIGIPIN is designed to be accessible and open-source, allowing developers to integrate it into apps and platforms.
Users can look up or share their DIGIPIN using mobile or web-based tools.
This initiative supports India’s digital transformation and modernization of its postal and geolocation infrastructure.
