How is DIGIPIN Different from a Regular Postal Address?

DIGIPIN introduces a new way of identifying locations, distinct from traditional postal addresses. A regular postal address is based on human-readable elements like house number, street name, area, and pin code. These traditional addresses are often vague, inconsistent, or incomplete, especially in rural or newly developed areas. DIGIPIN, on the other hand, is a location code generated from exact geographical coordinates. It uses a 10-character alphanumeric code to represent a specific 4m x 4m grid on Earth. This code is unique and unambiguous, allowing pinpoint accuracy for any place in India. While regular addresses are manually assigned, DIGIPIN is computed using satellite-based mapping technologies. The system was developed by India Post, IIT Hyderabad, and NRSC (ISRO), ensuring high technical precision. One key difference is that DIGIPIN works even where no traditional address exists, like open fields or temporary setups. Regular addresses are subject to change due to urban d...

What is DIGIPIN? DIGIPIN is a modern digital addressing system introduced in India to improve accuracy in location identification. It is an open-source, geo-coded system that assigns precise addresses using advanced mapping technology. The Department of Posts developed DIGIPIN in partnership with IIT Hyderabad and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) of ISRO. It divides the entire country into small grids measuring approximately 4 meters by 4 meters. Each grid is then assigned a unique 10-character alphanumeric code. This code is generated based on the grid’s exact latitude and longitude coordinates. Unlike traditional postal addresses, DIGIPIN offers pinpoint accuracy for any location, including remote or unaddressed areas. It can identify homes, shops, businesses, and even open land with precision. DIGIPIN aims to overcome the limitations of vague, inconsistent, or incomplete traditional addresses. This system is especially useful for emergency services, postal delivery, and log...
